3DS Updates and Ambassador Programme:
Here's the transcript of our look at the Nintendo 3DS updates from December 2011:
Carl:
So, that was our look at last year, and in your hand, you have a 3DS. Why? - because we've done that?
Pete:
Does it look at all different to you?
Carl:
Not at the moment, no.
Pete:
Well, it's just had a software update, and there have been a few changes. So I know we've done this in a fairly recent show, but it is worth talking about some of the updates.
A new update is available for download over the internet. It came out in the middle of December. StreetPass has had a makeover, and you can now go out collecting bits of maps to make a jigsaw puzzle map, which is fairly clever. Also, eShop is out, which is rather nifty - let me just give you a quick glance at this one. a quick look here, so there's - oh look, Eurosport.
Carl:
Oh yeah!
Pete:
And you've got news, recent arrivals, charts, software search, watch list, submit reviews - that's cool. You can actually review games and have your reviews placed up online.
Carl:
That's clever.
Pete:
And a few other little enhancements. The real enhancement, though, comes with the camera. Let me just go into that for you.
Carl:
Ooh - Nintendo's 3D camera!
Pete:
Yes. The last update brought us 3D photos; now 3D video.
Carl:
Ooh - that's clever! Let's have a look. It's a bit blurry, but hold on a second - let me go square onto it.
Pete:
You need to use this little autofocus to make it work.
Carl:
So is that dual lens? How have they done that? Is that pseudo 3D? Oh right, so we've got two lenses. It kind of works, but it's a little bit - ooh, that's a bit freaky on the eyes.
Pete:
Right, now in the best Blue Peter tradition, here is one I prepared earlier. Just tell me what you're seeing here.
Carl:
Okay, so you're showing me a picture of ... now, that looks alright actually. It's a video of you in the kitchen. Well, I'm liking it - there's a lot of three-dimensional you there.
Pete:
What this is is timelapse, so I set this on the kitchen table, made myself a cup of tea, and it took a photo every five seconds. That's me in high speed, making a cup of tea, stop/start animation - how cool!
Carl:
That's brilliant - can you go and make a cup of tea that fast now?
Pete:
I'll see what I can do. The other rather nice little thing is, as promised, the Ambassador programme is beginning to deliver.
Carl:
"Ambassador programme"? - what's that?
Pete:
Right, when the 3DS came out, it was a little on the pricey side. Shortly after launch, when it wasn't selling, they dropped the price. To compensate, for people like me that were early adopters, they brought out a whole bunch of freebie games. Now, we had a few nest titles delivered in September, but in December a bunch of titles came out for free. Now, to be fair, they're only Gameboy Advance games, but you can get Wario Ware, Mario Kart, Super Mario Bros, Metroid and a few others, all for free, which is rather nice.
Carl:
Wow, that's quite a big list!
Pete:
It's slightly tricky, how you get them. If you enrolled in the Ambassador programme, take a look at the link on our show notes, and we'll tell you how to do it. (Nintendo Ambassador Programme)
Also, of course, last month the Mario Kart 3DS version came out - Mario in 3D!
Mario Kart 3DS, available at Amazon.co.uk
Carl:
Okey-dokey!
Pete:
There you go, so that's our look at the updated Nintendo 3DS.
Carl:
Mamma mia!
