Terrier i-temp Intelligent Radiator Controller
At Gadget Show Live 2012, we spoke to Sindar from heating specialists Peglar about their clever programmable radiator controllers designed to cut down on your heating bills, the Terrier i-temp.
How the Terrier can save you £££s:
With home heating costs on the rise, we're always on the hunt for innovative products to bring down your bills. At Gadget Show Live in Birmingham, we met up with Sindar from Peglar, who filled us in on what their Terrier i-temp can do.
Essentially, this is an install-it-yourself TRV (Thermostatic Radiator Value). This replaces existing TRV units on home radiators, and allows you to programme them, either from the screen, via a remote control, or from a PC.
Why? Simple. In the morning, when your heating comes on, you're heating the whole house, including the rooms you don't need in the morning. If you think about it, half the rooms in your house don't need to be toasty-warm when you're on the way to work, and the same is true when you're at home in the evening. By replacing existing radiator controls with this unit, you can take greater control and only heat the rooms you need.
When combined with a system like British Gas Remote Heating Control, you get even more power, as you can control your heating from a smartphone whilst you're out.

Terrier i-temp Explored
Many of us have Thermostatic Radiator Values on our radiators, but aren't familiar with what they are, or how to get the best from one. Here's a pic of a basic "dumb" TRV:
A standard TRV - Thermostatic Radiator Valve
If you buy a Terrier i-temp, you replace the existing TRV with the new unit, and use the screen and controls to set a schedule and take greater control of when that radiator pumps out heat. Reducing the time that the radiator is on unnecessarily, obviously saves you money, hopefully paying for itself.

Installation
... is actually pretty straightforward. No need for a heating engineer or to drain your system down or anything like that - it should be a quick and easy job. It's a case of un-tightening the fixing ring, removing the old unit, connecting the Terrier to the value top, and tightening it up.

Optional Extras
As mentioned in the interview, you can optionally get a remote control for the i-temp (to save you having to bend down or scrabble behind a sofa). There's also a rather clever window sensor that works out when you've opened a window, and knocks the temperature on the radiator down to compensate.
