Motorola Moto G 3rd Generation Review

Powerful and affordable, the new Moto G is durable and water-resistant. With a 13 MP camera, and the speed of 4G LTE, it's ready for anything. All in one beautiful design that looks as good as it feels. What does our listener Nicholas have to say?

Motorola Moto G (3rd Generation Review):

Thanks to regular listener Nicholas Skippins for sending in this review:

The last time I emailed you I asked if you could please do a review of the Motorola G 3rd Generation 8GB, 1GB RAM model in black that I was seriously considering buying.

Well, I went ahead and brought one and I must say that for the few weeks that I have owned this phone I am seriously impressed with what Lenovo who now own Motorola have done to be able to release a phone with such a good spec and performance for such a cheap price of £139.00 although I got mine significantly cheaper in fact it was £84.00.

There is also a 16GB, 2GB RAM model available for £209.00 but only if you buy it directly from the Motorola website.

Also I personally thought that owning a phone that had a screen size of 5 inches would have been to big but actually it has been fine and actually fills thinner and lighter than my original Motorola G 1st Generation 16GB, 1GB RAM model in black.

The screen itself may only be 720p when a lot of other phones are starting to be released with 1080p screens but it is pretty decent and viewing angles are also good as far as I can see.

Call quality is also good with voices coming across clear and not muffled at all.

The phone also has 4G LTE connectivity right from the world go. Previous version of the Motorola G had to wait for a separate model featuring 4G LTE connectivity.

The battery has also been improved and is now 2470 mAh which I have found will easily last a whole day with mixed use.

As for the cameras the main camera on the rear is 13MP auto focus with dual tone LED flash and on the front it has a 5MP fixed focus selfie camera.

They both take pretty good shots considering the phones price and they are certainly much improved over the disappointing cameras on the original Motorola G which were 5MP auto focus with single LED flash on the rear and a 1.3MP fixed focus on the front.

The rear camera can also shoot full 1080p 30 fps video and 720p slow motion video.

1080p videos look good but I have not yet tried out slow motion video.

There is a single speaker on the font of the phone which I personally feel is a great place to put a speaker on a phone because when listening to some music or watching a video you might normally tend to put the phone on a table therefore blocking the sound from the speaker that many phone manufacturer put on the back which can lead to the sound sounding muffled and not a clear as it could be.

So by putting the speaker on the front of the phone insures to a degree that the sound will come across cleaner than if it was on the back.

Other than Lenovo/Motorola, HTC are the only other manufacturer that I can think of who have put at least with there high end and flagship phones the single (mono) or twin (stereo) speakers on the front.

I don't know why more manufacturers don't put there single or twin speakers on the front of the phone which is a much more logical place for them.

And the Motorola G 3rd Generation has the bonus of being IPX 7 certified which means that it is water resistant. This does not mean that the phone is water proof.

It can stay in water up to 1 meter of for 30 minutes but just because you can do this with the phone does not mean that I am going to do this it is just nice to know that when I am outside and have to use my phone outside when it raining that it won't get damaged by water but for the water resistants to work you must use the official Motorola backplate or flip covers as they have the rubber seals that protect the phone from water damage.

Hopefully thanks to the Motorola G 3rd Generation running virtually a stock version of Android Lollipop 5.1.1 it will be updated to Android M which in the last few week was confirmed to be called Marshmallow in keeping with Google naming it's operating systems after sweet treats.

So even those I have brought this phone could you please still review this phone as I think it is a great phone and a lot of your listeners will be interested in a phone that has great performance for not much money whether you buy it on pay as you go, contract or sim free especially if they want to cut there mobile phone bills but don't want to loose out on performance and features.
